Membership meeting, December 1999

Trip with SBC's Mercedes-Benz Citaro
Time: Wednesday December 15th, 1999 at 6:15 pm.
Place: Departure from Vognhall 5 to Norwegian Tele Museum.
The last membership meeting in 1999 will be held on Norwegian Tele Museum. We are invited to a guided tour at the museum, and some film will also be shown on a big screen. The trip from Vognhall 5 to the Tele Museum will be with one of Schøyens Bilcentraler's new buses, Mercedes-Benz Citaro. This type of buses are about to become SBC's new standard city bus. So far, five single buses and three articulated buses are ordered. On the trip is also SBC's responsible person for technical training, Harald Hansen, who will inform us about the new type of buses. After the meeting is over, the bus will return to Jernbanetorget and Skøyen. Be welcome!

Membership cards

A constantly recurring question is about membership cards. We will in 2000 try to find a practical solution, both for the members and the member register. This means that we will isssue membership cards manually, while we continue the work to find a better solution.

We remind that membership cards or receipts are valid as entrance tickets at Sporvejsmuseet (the tramway museum) in Denmark, Sporveismuseet in Trondheim and Svenska Sporvägssellskapet's (Swedish Tramway Company's) establishments in Malmköping, malmö and the Djurgård line in Stockholm. A complete list over this will be published early in 2000.

The museum will be closed on Saturdays

The tramway museum Vognhall 5 are now open only on Sundays and Mondays. Unfortunately, the museum has been manned with the same person in general during the summer Saturdays in 1999. Because the interest of being museum guard has been quite low, the museum will be closed on Saturdays during whole 2000. We have therefore changed the ads in the next year's booklets.

If more people want to be museum guards, we might keep the museum open on Saturdays.

The museum's opening hours are now Sundays and Mondays from 12 pm to 3 pm.

Public transport in Oslo 125 years!

Some will perhaps react a bit to this heading and claim that there were both organized boat traffic and local trains far earlier. But in the city itself it's in 2000 125 years since the first public mean of transport, the horse tramway, opened for traffic. The jubilee day itself is October 6th when Kristiania Sporveisselskab's first line opened from Homansby over Stortorvet to Vestbanen and Oslo (Gamlebyen).

Together with Sporveien, LTF is planning to mark this jubilee. Today the work hasn't come far, but it's clear that there will be an occation during the summer 2000. The jubilee day itself will have a small occation itself.

The summer occation will consist of a large cortege that will consist both of buses and tramcars from 1875 and to our time. More information about the arrangements will come during the spring.

News from Vinterbro

The works at Vinterbro are heading forward. The tramshed is now much better secured against housebreaking than before. In addition, wire posts are erected and made ready with backstays to put up overhead wires on last year's 90 metre long lengthening. This work was carried through with the tower car that naturally showed out to be excellent for this purpose.

There's still much vandalism, and far too much time is used to clear up after vandals. Therefore it's high priority to get funds to a lengthening of the tramshed, so as much as possible can get indoors. At sight, we hope to get all the rolling stock indoors, but this costs money and makes it difficult today.

Sporvejshistorisk Selskab in Denmark have taken over some two-axled trucks that were stored at Vinterbro. SHS has some tramcars, both from Copenhagen and Odense, that lack trucks, and parts of our trucks will be used to get these on wheels again.

SHS will also give us some wrought-iron ports that may be used in the work at Vinterbro. The ports we have, are of "highway type" and not very suitable at a museum of this kind. Therefore we will take a closer look at these posts during 2000 and consider if we will bring them to Norway.

Subscription for 2000

Giro for payment of the membership subscription for 2000 is attached to the paper version of LTF News, which is sent to all LTF members. If you wish to receive a giro for membership in 2000, you may write some words to LTF's webmaster or take a look here.

Storing of buses

As mentioned earlier in LTF News and annual reports, the association has a big problem finding storage places. It has been done much effort in 1999 to solve this, and for some time it seemed that we succeeded. However it turned out that the garage we thought we could use, was occupied after all. This means that the storage problem is still there, and that we enter another winter without satisfactory storage of historical vehicles.

The ELV directive

Also from unexpected range we are countering difficulties and challenges. This time it's the EU and the so-called "End of Life Vehicle" directive that might cause us trouble in the future. This directive says that all motorized vehicles that doesn't have a plate, shall be trashed!

The veteran car enviroments are working on this case. As a part of this, SBC's vintage bus club went to Strasbourg with A-15082 Scania/Iversen 1968 to contribute to the lobby activity. The bus impressed the members of the EU Parliament, but the result is still unknown. LTF is also waiting for leads from antiquarian authorities.
